Fawny got a playmate!

Sa-Ga Farms got a new mule baby and mule momma on Saturday, June 24, 2006.  We are really excited about the purchase of Tag the mule and his momma, Sassy (registered Paint mare) from Rush Farms in Ulman, MO  http://www.rushfarms.com/stallions.html

Fawny T. was shocked that there was another critter his size on the farm, and more than a little jealous too!

Fawny's 5 weeks old now and he needs a pal

Fawny is such a smart baby mule.  He needs a playmate in the worst way, so we are shopping for a mule foal.  Probably a molly, so we can name her Flory... get it... Flory and Fawny...  We're going to look at four baby mules nearby to us tonight.  There are a total of 11 baby mules due at the farm we are going to.  Surely we'll find just the right one to be Fawny's friend.

Fawny is already in school.  He knows how to lead, turn, back.  All work and no play makes Fawny a dull boy...

More mule news to come.

Welcome to Sa-Ga Farm's Mule blog

Hello and welcome to our mule blog.  We are so proud of our two mules, Onyx and Fawny, that we just wanted to show them off.

Onyx came to us in 2004 when I was in need of a riding therapy animal to help me recover from a stroke that had left me without much balance.  Onyx was so kind and so steady that she helped me get back into the saddle again.  She has her for ever home on Sa-Ga farm.

Fawny is the culmination of a dream for us.  We had wanted a buckskin mule for at least 15 years, but our interests in showing Arabian horses kept us from buying a mule at all until Onyx came along.  We had seen a beautiful buckskin mule that was bred and raised by our close by neighbor, Mr. Fawny Taylor, back in 1990.  We were so busy with building our house and raising Arabians that we didn't get around to asking Mr. Taylor about that buckskin mule until he had already sold her.

Some friends of ours let us lease a cremello Quarter Horse mare last year to try to raise our own buckskin mule.  We transported semen from a beautiful Jack named Thunderbolt out in California (Pacific International Genetics) and the resulting foal was a perfect buckskin mule with primitive dun markings.  It was totally beginner's luck for us.  This was the first mule we ever bred.  The odds of getting the exact color you want are not the greatest when you breed mules.  Mules are hybrids, so everything you think you know about equine color genetics you can just kiss goodbye.

The baby was born April 25th, 2006.  He is exactly the same as that mule we saw 15 years ago at Mr. Taylor's farm.  Mr. Taylor passed away a few years ago.  We decided to name our new arrival Fawny in honor of Mr. Taylor.
